Gallego-Hernandez, Ana
Ana L. Gallego-Hernandez is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology Department at University of California, Santa Cruz. At the Yildiz Lab, her research focuses in understanding the transmission of intestinal infectious diseases like cholera. Ana is originally from Mexico, she is planning to return to her country and promote scientific collaborations between Mexico and US with the goal of improving human health. The participation in the PDP program provided her a great opportunity to learn experimental design, teaching and leadership skills, which are important aspects for STEM teaching. She would like to be a Professor in a Mexican University and apply all the teaching strategies learned in the PDP to improve STEM education. angalleg@ucsc.edu |
Activity Name: Michaelis-Menten Kinetics
Audience: 12 undergraduates
Venue: MARC/IMSD SRI PREP
Main content learning outcome:
Learners used the concept of enzyme kinetics to investigate, by plotting a Michaelis-Menten graph, how an enzyme interacts with different substrates, and determine which substrate works the most effciently.
-Identify that the Michaelis-Menten plot has units of uM vs (uM(P)/sec OR uM vs (molP/sec)/molE
-Describe the key portions of an enzymatic reaction using the Michaelis-Menten graph
-Understand that catalytic effciency is the best way to compare enzymes.
The raising question section (videos) helped the students to participate and understand concepts needed for the activity. In addition, this was a very nice E&I activity.
In order to properly facilitate the activity, PDP participants need to have a clear understanding of the content prompt. That can be achieved by defning the content prompt, activities and completing the teaching plan in advance before the teaching activities.
